Fast forward to Spring Summer 21

January is always a time to look forward to the new seasons trends and my most exciting sunny season! SS21 is a bit different in that the trends were created during lockdown. Designers did not see their teams and the creativity that comes with travel was lost. What’s more the shows were presented via live streams and videos, so watched by a minimal audience. Coverage was low and obviously the ‘street style’ looks that I love to lust after weren’t there either. So, what to wear next season?

Designers were in two camps – some optimistic creating bright dramatic looks for your going out wardrobe and others tentative, playing safe with luxury home wear and slipper styling.

Of course, my favourite trends will always be the more joyful and colourful, because there is no doubt that dressing up has a massive impact on your mood. Let’s be positive people, no more loungewear thank you.

Dresses will be flamboyant and extravagant because when you actually do have an occasion when you go out, you need to make the most of it.

My favourite coveted SS21 dress has to be Molly Godard’s pink frill dress and Valentino’s pink satin one shouldered number. Yes there was a lot of pink, a lot of tulle and a lot of frill. A sunny disposition is the name of the game.

With this mind, I’ve found some pieces to invest in now, so you’re ready for that first party but you can also dress it down with thick tights, chunky boots and statement coat now.

With all of us dreaming of escaping to the beach and summer holidays ( I know we’ve just booked ours and I’ve renewed my passport!) There will be a lot of beach themes and Hawaiian style fun out there next season. I cannot wait to get out my chunky espadrilles.

Versace offered jewelled star fish in their collection and I already have Rixo’s mermaid dress on my wish list.

Back to reality, rather than an August holiday (!), many designers have re interpreted classic looks by adding a twist. For example trench coats with added modern details and others that have balloon sleeves.

The Black dress has also been re invented with contemporary proportions. Take Victoria Beckham’s beautiful cut out piece or Zimmerman’s open back midi dress. Wide open backs were seen a lot in many SS21 collections – something I personally gloss over due to bra issues! Beautiful on so many though.

A trend I do gravitate towards is puff sleeves and they are here to stay in bigger proportions than ever. Billowy and romantic or more structured and fierce, I’ll take them however they come. Always great for adding width to the shoulder line and highlighting your waist. Take a look at these.

So, it’s all good I can keep wearing my puff sleeves from last season but after scanning the sales for investment pieces, here are some that caught my eye.

The SS21 catwalks were also awash with denim and a more realistic, wearable look. We have all been so used to joggers and elasticated waist bands it’s good to see that it is wide, baggier styled jeans that are trending now. Even Victoria Beckham included denim jeans in her collection for the first time ever.

If you want to get your hands on this look now, I’m loving the look of Raey’s relaxed boyfriend jeans.

I may stick to my new Zara wide jeans that being high waisted and very long (I had to cut a few inches off) really lengthen the leg.

Most of us will continue to work from home for a while into 2021, so baggy jeans are a must as are the comfort of our slippers. These have become our staple so why not make them cosy and chic at the same time.

Net a Porter have seen a huge demand for house slippers, from velvet to shearling to leather. Here are a few of the best.

Olivia Morris at Home - Daphne £245
Sleeper Pink Shearling Slipper £220
The Row leather slipper £600

I hope this has given you an idea of some of the main trends coming through next season and more importantly an escape into the future and what we can look forward to!
